Kisspeptin, also known as metastin, is a protein naturally found in the human body that plays a key role in hormone signalling, particularly during puberty and reproductive processes. This protein is not only essential for puberty and fertility, but is also thought to influence mood, behaviour and kidney function. Kisspeptin has also been found in the brain, where it may potentially inhibit tumour growth and prevent metastasis. This aspect of Kisspeptin has attracted considerable interest in the scientific community.
Kisspeptin-10, a derivative of the Kisspeptin protein, has attracted considerable attention in recent research because of its important role in stimulating the release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), a critical hormone for sexual development and reproduction. Numerous studies suggest that Kisspeptin-10 may directly stimulate GnRH release at GnRH nerve terminals. This finding suggests a new site of action for Kisspeptin-10, opening up possibilities for potential therapeutic applications. Stimulation of gonadotropin secretion in women by Kisspeptin-10 has also been shown to be regulated by sex-steroid feedback. This finding may have important implications for understanding hormonal balance and women's reproductive health.
Kisspeptin-10 is a potent stimulator of luteinising hormone (LH) and may increase LH pulse frequency. Studies have shown that boluses of Kisspeptin-10 can significantly induce LH secretion in men, while continuous administration of Kisspeptin-10 may increase testosterone levels and the frequency and amplitude of LH pulses. In addition, studies have shown that administration of Kisspeptin-10 may increase LH pulse frequency and secretion in men with low testosterone and type 2 diabetes, providing proof of concept. In adolescents at Tanner stage five, administration of Kisspeptin-10 was found to significantly increase plasma LH and testosterone levels. Kisspeptin-10 has also been associated with a range of potential benefits beyond hormone regulation. These include increased sexual arousal, improved mood and behaviour, and regulation of fertility. This peptide has also been proposed as a useful addition to testosterone replacement therapy to maintain fertility and prevent testicular atrophy.
